What exactly is design/build?

Design/Build has become a popular phrase used by many builders these days.  Design/build means that the same people who design your space will also do the build-out of that design.

While many builders offer design services, only a small percentage actually have a professionally trained designer on staff - and of the ones who do - an even fewer number have a truly qualified professional designer.  Let’s face it - most of us can successfully manage a construction project. But not all have the innate skill coupled with the many years of training that a designer who has graduated from a four year (or greater) accredited design program with a degree in interior design.

When we say we offer DESIGN/BUILD, we mean that we will design your space and then we will build it for you.  The key to the success of the spaces we design and build is that WE START WITH DESIGN.  Our clients know that all highly functional spaces start with a solid design.  Not just a good design, but a great design.

Gavi’s Tip:
Once you have a great design it makes the most sense to have the people who did the design do the build-out of the design as well.

Why is that?   Here is a well kept secret:
There are two types of contractors out there.  The first type is what we call the lazy contractor.  This is the guy who will look at an innovative design and automatically say “that can’t be done”.   We know from our twenty-some-odd years of experience that these words are simply code for ‘I’ve never done this and it scares the daylights out of me”.

Now mind you, there are a lot of non-professional ‘designers’ – often referred to as decorettes – who regularly present builders with designs that cannot be built.  These are not what we are talking about right now.

Then there are the other bread of builders – the ones who love to tackle new ideas.  Like us, they love to push the envelope.  These are the only contractors that we work with to build our designs.  Experience has taught us that if you don’t have a progressive-minded contractor, you will be talked into making changes to your design.  These changes are often so severe that the end result does not match at all to our vision.

Sadly, we see this too often.  It makes us wander why someone would pay for a good design only to have it altered later on?

Case study # 39 Sandy and Jake L.
Sandy and Jake L. called us to re-design their master suite

Client challenge
Sandy and Jake loved their home and had done a lot of renovation work in it themselves.  When the came time to renovate their out-dated master suite they said “we knew that we would hire a professional to design it and have a contractor do the renovation.  We where so delighted to find that Interior Dimensions would do both.  We had no idea that an interior design firm could do the construction work as well.  We wish we would have known about you before we renovated our kitchen”.
Using the same design firm to do the build-out not only assures that the original design will remain in tact but it will also make your life a whole lot easier.   Think of the time and energy you will save by not having to look for a qualified builder and then oversee his/her work. – Gavi Fiedler, Senior Designer/President, Interior Dimensions, Inc.

Client reaction:
Here’s what Sandy had to say about our construction team – “I never knew that such a professional crew even existed.  They were all so polite, quiet, and clean.  They went out of their way to protect the rest of the floors, walls, etc. that were not being altered and completely cleaned up after themselves at the end of each day!  This is unheard of in construction.  We barely felt the impact of construction going on in our home.  At the end of the project we were sad to see them go, especially Matt, the job foreman.  He was like part of our family.”

Even if you have a contractor who you’ve worked with before and like you may want to consider hiring us to oversee the build out of our design to ensure that the integritiy of the design remains in tact.
